The Wanaka Concert Society looks forward to welcoming Trio Kagura to Wanaka. 

Based in Manchester, UK, the Trio comprises of Yuuki Bouterey-Ishido, a New Zealand cellist currently performing around the UK and Europe.

Yuuki has been invited to perform at major festivals around the world, including the Schnittke Festival in London and the Semaine Internationale Piano et musique de chambre in Switzerland. Other significant performances include solo recitals in Japan, Italy, and New Zealand. He also toured Europe extensively over three years as a member of the Menuhin Academy Soloists under the direction of Maxim Vengerov and has received numerous awards for solo cello as well as chamber music. 

Japanese-born pianist Kanako Mizuno has achieved some remarkable feats in her young career. Successful as both soloist and accompanist, UK-based Mizuno has received a Global Talent Visa, and has been awarded numerous prizes and scholarships in recognition of her skilful piano playing. Winning placements include Japan Player’s Competition, the Young Artist Piano Competition, Le Brilant French Music Competition, Tokyo Piano Competition and Japan Classical Music Competition.

Pijus Jonušas is a Lithuanian violinist from Vilnius. A keen chamber musician and teacher, Pijus studied at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague with Peter Brunt and at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester UK with Pavel Fischer. Pijus has collaborated with such artists as Magnus Johnston, Guy Johnston, John Ryan, Timothy Ridout, Petr Prause, Susie Meszaros and Abel Salacoe. In 2019, Pijus joined the Elmore Quartet and in 2021 was appointed as a Junior Fellow with the Quartet at the Royal Northern College of Music. He currently performs as a member of Trio Kagura. 

Trio Kagura are currently Britten Pears Arts’ Artists in Residence. The name Kagura is taken from the Japanese word for ritual music and dance that is performed to bring joy and peace to the community.

Award winning singer Ali Harper and guitarist Harry Harrison reimagine the legendary partnership between Ella Fitzgerald and distinguished guitarist Joe Pass. From sultry standards to playful scat, this show pays tribute to their extraordinary chemistry as they perform classics from the Great American Songbook including Misty, I Ain’t Got Nothing But The Blues, Stormy Weather and Ain’t Misbehavin’.

#### **Artist biographies**
Award-winning Entertainer Ali Harper is a graduate of Toi Whakaari: The New Zealand Drama School. With her career spanning 30+ years, Ali wears many hats as a singer, actor, producer, writer, MC, singing coach and yoga teacher. 

Highlights include The Court Theatre production of the one-woman show Songs for Nobodies where Ali was awarded ‘Best One Woman Show’ at New York’s United Solo Festival on 42nd Street in 2018 as well as Bombshells where Ali was awarded ‘Best Actress’ at New York’s United Solo Festival in 2014 and ‘Chapman Tripp Best Actress’ in Wellington in 2008. 

Ali has performed her cabaret show in A Down Under Diva! in New York’s prolific cabaret venues; Don’t Tell Mama and at The Metropolitan Room. 

Ali’s production company Ali-Cat Productions produces and tours her shows; A Natural Woman, The Look of Love, Songs for Nobodies, A Doris Day Special, Legendary Divas, A Down-Under Diva!, Bombshells and Tell Me On A Sunday.

Originally from Glasgow Scotland, Harry Harrison has been performing and composing music in Christchurch New Zealand since 1985 and currently teaches on the Bachelor of Music Arts programme at Ara Institute of Canterbury.

Harry’s recording portfolio is comprised of a large body original music crossing jazz and roots genres, and a collection of audio-visual collaborations with iconic New Zealand artists.

A regular festival performer, Harry has worked throughout New Zealand and Australia performing and recording with national and international artists such as Hayley Westenra, Mary Coughlan, Dave Dobbyn, Bic Runga, Midge Marsden, Julia Deans and many more.

Harry’s stringed instruments incorporate all of the guitar family, electric, steel string acoustic, nylon string, lapsteel, bottle neck resonator and dobro. Adding to this are four and five string banjo, mandolin and ukelele.

The Wanaka Concert Society is excited that fabulous pianist Francesca Khalifa, who performed  in 2023 and received huge applause, is returning to Wanaka. 

Francesca who resides in New York has performed extensively in the United States and Europe. 

Highlights of recent seasons include concerts as soloist with the Cairo Symphony Orchestra in Egypt, the Orchestra Filarmonica Pozzoli in Milan, a solo appearance at Steinway Hall New York City, chamber music concerts with OSJ La Verdi Chamber Orchestra in New York City, and recitals in China and Cuba.
  
As soloist, Khalifa has collaborated with the Guido d’Arezzo Symphony Orchestra (Italy), the Oosterkerk Festival Chamber Orchestra (The Netherlands) and with the MET Opera Orchestra string quartet in Mozart piano concertos (New York City).

Khalifa is the founder and Artistic Director of the Beethoven Fest New York City. 

She received the City Artist Corps Grant 2021 and was the winner of the Ferrara International Piano Festival in 2014, the Schio International Piano Competition, Alink-Argerich Foundation, the Premio Loreto Lancia International Piano Competition and the N. van Westerhout International Piano Competition.

Acclaimed Italian-Egyptian Pianist Francesca Khalifa returns to Wanaka

Pianist David Selfe and percussionist Jeremy Fitzsimons add live musical accompaniment to two silent Charlie Chaplin films selected from: The Pawn Shop (1916), A Dog’s Life (1918), and The Kid (1921).

In the place of synchronised recorded music, the musical duo use authentic original composition, improvisation, and an array of sound effects to capture the comedy, pathos, and heart of these classic films.

#### **Artist biographies**
Having travelled the world playing the piano and bringing people together with music, David Selfe is still sharing what he loves. 

He started playing at the age of seven and by twelve had his own band playing gigs and concerts for all ages. He gained a scholarship to The Purcell School in London and graduated to the Royal Academy of Music in London where he gained an L.R.A.M. & Prof. Cert.

Living as a keyboard nocturnalist in West End Shows, he was well known for keeping the show together for both cabaret and production. To learn more about David’s work, visit www.davidselfe.com.

Jeremy Fitzsimons is a freelance percussionist based in Thames. He was principal percussionist of Orchestra Wellington, plays regularly with the NZSO, is percussionist with the Pink Floyd Experience, and has been freelancing in Wellington since 1993. 

He has recorded CDs of marimba and percussion music by Gareth Farr and John Psathas, toured as marimbist with many groups for Chamber Music New Zealand, and was a founding member of Strike Percussion and Gareth Farr’s Drumdrag. Prominent projects include being soloist with Orchestra Wellington for the Psathas concerto View From Olympus in 2020, guest soloist at a marimba festival in Portugal, ensemble soloist with the APO, member of Double Shot marimba and percussion duo since 2015, and he performs in Silent Movies Live (old silent movies with original music with pianist David Selfe).

### **Bios**

**Sanaz Rezai**

Born in Tehran, Iran, Dr. Sanaz Rezai began studying piano in Vienna, at the age of seven. By the age of ten, she competed at the international level where she was awarded numerous prizes.

After immigrating to the United States, Dr. Rezai completed her Bachelor of Science in Piano Performance at California State University, Fullerton, graduating cum laude and with honors. 

At CSU Fullerton, she was awarded the undergraduate pianist award, won first place in the Grossmont Community Concert Association Competition, and received the Fenstermaker Scholarship through the Musical Merits Foundation of Greater San Diego. 

Dr. Rezai went on to complete both her Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts at UCLA in piano performance. Her dissertation topic was Maurice Ravel’s Gaspard de la nuit within the context of Orientalism during Impressionism. 

While at UCLA, she taught German language courses for the German department, as well as piano instruction for composition and performance students and music appreciation courses in the Music department. 

Dr. Rezai has had the privilege to work closely and perform the works of prominent UCLA faculty composers including Mark Carlson and Richard Danielpour. She has taken part in many music festivals, offered solo recitals, and performed as a soloist with orchestras and wind ensembles. 

Dr. Rezai worked at UCLA as a collaborative pianist and taught group piano courses. Her areas of interest include piano pedagogy, collaborative piano, and the interdisciplinary studies of art and music history. 

Dr. Rezai had the privilege to study with Jane Bastien, Gloria Cheng, Eduardo Delgado, George Katz, Vitaly Margulis, Ingrid Pachner, and Walter Ponce. 
Recently Dr. Rezai moved with her family to Dunedin, New Zealand where she is enjoying the lovely music scene, delicious cinnamon scrolls, and beautiful nature. 

**Heleen Du Plessis**

Known as an inspiring and passionate cellist and teacher, Dr du Plessis performs as soloist with orchestras and in duo- or chamber music recitals and CD record- ings with various top instrumentalists. 

At the University of Otago, Heleen holds the position of Senior Lecturer of Performance and teaches Cello, Chamber Music, Pedagogy of Music Performance and Performance, Health, and Well-being. She is the principal cellist of the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra and director of Cellists of Otago. 

Highlights of her performances include the Saint-Saens Cello concerto with the Dunedin Symphony orchestra and a Chamber Music New Zealand regional tour with marimba virtuoso Yoshiko Tsuruta. 

Her CD from the project ‘Cello for Africa’ was nominated for the International Listeners’ Choice Award, and described as “embodying the highest standard of artistry and genuine attempt to build a meaningful cross-cultural dialogue” (Violoncello Foundation, USA). “Earnest emotive string colour with every phrase, always 5 traversing a glorious pathway direct from the heart to the fingers”, has been hailed as the “hallmark of du Plessis’ delivery” (Otago Daily Times). 

**Tessa Petersen**

Tessa Petersen is the Senior Lecturer in Violin at the University of Otago and Concertmaster of the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra. A top graduate of Otago University, she pursued postgraduate studies at the Royal College of Music, London, under a prestigious British Commonwealth Scholarship, following which she went into a career as performer and teacher based in the UK and then the USA, before returning to New Zealand in 2006. 

Equally at home performing classical and contemporary repertoire, Tessa actively promotes and collaborates with New Zealand composers. 
Her Ode CD Release-The Mozart Fellowship features works by New Zealand composers for solo violin and violin/piano. In the Ode CD Father and Son she featured in works by Anthony Ritchie. 

In 2020, Brighter Than Blue (Rattle CD), released by acclaimed NZ guitarist Matthew Marshall, features Tessa in Suite for Violin & Guitar by Kenneth Young. 

In 2021 Tessa won the Best Music award in the Dunedin Fringe Festival for her premiere of Entrances for solo violin and tape by Jeremy Mayall, based on the poetry of Cilla McQueen. 

**Tessa Romano**

Dr. Tessa Romano is Senior Lecturer of Voice at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand. They hold a DMA from the University of Colorado Boulder, an MM from the University of Michigan, and an AB in Music and Italian from Princeton University. 

Dr. Romano has held opera fellowships at Aspen Opera Center and CU New Opera Workshop. They have performed with the Syracuse Symphony, Hartford Symphony, Dunedin Symphony Orchestra, Auckland Philharmonic and American Handel Society. 

Past awards include first place in the Florida Grieg Voice Competition, Winner of the Art of Art Song Competition, and Winner of the Franco-American Vocal Academy’s Grand Concours Prize. 

Dr. Romano is Co-Vice President of the New Zealand Association of Teachers of Singing and a Board Member of the New York Singing Teachers’ Association.
