Bill Martin, pianist and director of the Dunedin Jazz Club, brings a seven piece band to the Lake Wanaka Centre on February 12 to perform music from “Over to You”, a six track album of original jazz that is also being released on CD at the concert.     Described by RNZ concert presenter Nick Tipping as “one of the movers and shakers of Aotearoa Jazz”, Bill Martin has been slowly building a profile as a composer and performer and is now working to share this music with a wider audience across Otago and the South Island. The Bill Martin Septet will also perform new compositions     The band features top instrumentalists from the Dunedin music scene, including trumpeter Ralph Miller, who performed the lead part in the “Birth of the Cool” concert staged by the Wanaka Concert Society in 2022.     Alongside him will be alto saxophonist Nick Cornish, who is well known to classical audiences for his work as Principal Oboe for the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra and regular sub for the NZSO.     One of the aims of the Dunedin Jazz Club is to provide performance opportunities for rising stars and to this end, the band features young tenor saxophonist Isaac Randel and trombonist Finn McKinlay. These players are known as the “young guns” on the Dunedin scene and have been wowing audiences at late night jam sessions.    The players from the DJC were amazed by the enthusiastic audience that attended the “Birth of the Cool” show, so please get to the show and support the concept of presenting regular jazz concerts in Wanaka.     At this stage, the DJC plans to present four concerts in Wanaka in 2023, featuring artists such as international pianist Dan Costa (UK) and Wellington based tenor saxophonist Oscar Laven.     The remaining concerts for the year will also be staged on Sunday afternoons.
